‘Looking deeper into the history of surfing
the Ancient Hawaiians called it ‘heʻe nalu,’ which translates close to ‘wave sliding.’
To them, it was seen as an art, with a high spiritual affiliation.
We respect the ocean and its rhythms, and we teach all of our students to do the same.
This respect creates a safe environment where we can all have fun and accelerate.”
– Kurt Rist
Kurt Rist is a global Big Wave rider on the hunt for the biggest hollowest waves in the world.

Kurt Rist is patient, humble and discreet – but nonetheless, his name has popped up all over the big-wave map in recent years. Kurt has turned his dreams into reality as he chases the really big waves from his hometown in Southampton. He is just as comfortable in the Atlantic as he is in the Pacific and he calls the west coast of Ireland his second home!
Kurt talks about his Surf School with KDHamptons and explains what draws him to Mullaghmore and surfing Ireland!
Hamptons-Surf-Co teaches in the Southampton area beaches during the summer months. In the winter Rist takes the teaching on the road, traveling with the weather and the waves! Currently, Rist is fundraising for a Community Outreach Surf Program.

In 2007 the NY Times illuminated their reader’s minds, with an invite to the surf culture, waves and beaches of the Hamptons. For a moment, after reading Elizabeth Hayt’s ‘On These Waves, Everyone’s a Local’ the Hamptons beaches were now their local spot as well. They became part of a conversation about a lifestyle and a way of thinking.
Flying Point is a place to talk weather, waves and surfboards. Ray-Ban sunglasses, Olukai Mustangs, a Quicksilver Hoodie, a Hayden or Channel Island Board or something from Billabong may find their way into the conversation. But it’s more about friendships forged and techniques mastered. The team at Flying Point are most interested in how they can help you have a better day, therein lies the reason they feel like family.
Main Beach Surf & Sport (631-537-2716)
352 Montauk Hwy, Wainscott, NY 11975
The Super Swap at Main Beach Surf & Sport is 30-year tradition, one that spans three generations. Every year MBS&S hosts several super swaps Spring through Autumn. A Super-Swap is a unique opportunity to sell your used watersports gear and receive a 100% credit to use on new gear.
Expert staff and a great selection of top brands plus the Super-Swap allow families to watch their kids grow up in the surf lifestyle and trade up to new top-shelf gear every season. The team is always there to answer questions and point novices and experienced surfers alike in the right direction. They answer two questions very well, WHERE & HOW, whether it’s surfing, kayaking or canoeing. Rentals are available on Georgica Pond every day, no reservations needed! If you are looking for something with a bit more, try a full moon paddle or an oceanfront clam bake followed by paddling home under the stars.
From MB S&S – ‘We are experts in this area and pride ourselves on giving local knowledge about our waterways and estuaries. We love to share our equipment knowledge and the Surf swaps provide this backdrop for us to engage with families and friends, have a barbecue and talk gear!’

Any conversation about outdoors in The Hamptons will most likely include a word or two about Surf Boards available at Khan’s. The simplest way to explain is to say that Kahn Ngo is a man in perpetual motion. Happy with his accomplishments, Kahn will always say that there is so much more he wants to do. With three locations and every imaginable toy, Khanh Sports is the ultimate surf shop! You are truly lucky if the location you visits happens to be where Khanh is spending the day. You will be greeted with a smile, a great deal of knowledge, and a desire to make your day Out East the best it can be!
