Even in the summer, the traffic is not too bad to go to Sag Harbor from East Hampton. And you will be glad you did!
Sag Harbor is different from the other villages in the Hamptons. Once a whaling town and international port of call, it has retained much of its old-time charm and eclectic nature. And the shops of Sag Harbor reflect that history and spirit!
Here are some of my favorites:
LoveShackFancy
117 Main Street, Sag Harbor 631.808.3995
A 1780’s farmhouse in Sag Harbor received a bit of a makeover a few years back, it was transformed into the very first home of ‘LoveShackFancy.’ I strongly suspect that the charms of the 240 year old farmhouse remain quite intact. The founder Rebecca Hessel Cohen designs the most enchanting fashions and her Storybooks will capture your attention for a moment that feels like forever. Each with a story as compelling as the designs it highlights.
A couple of our favorite ‘storybooks’. . .
FOR THE LOVE OF SPRING – A Sweet Awakening at Missy’s flower fields
LOVE LETTERS – Love At First Sight
Soft colors, beautiful music, flowers, and more flowers, and a space that soothes and inspires.” Inspired by vintage finds, LSF is rich in detail, flattering silhouettes, soft hues, and intricate lace, with an emphasis on whimsical hand-dyed fabrics and enchanting vintage-inspired romantic floral prints.
Overgrown floral displays of fresh cut flowers from local florists are the mainstay of the decor. Better yet – you can take a bunch or two home!
Sag Harbor Cycle Company
34 Bay Street, Sag Harbor 631.725.1110
The Sag Harbor Cycle Company is much more than a bike shop, it’s existence is founded in the community it serves. This is the home of the ‘Group Ride’ on the East End – people sharing a ride, making friends – this is the kind of business where I want to buy my next Fat Bike!
Just listen to what they have to say about their organized rides: ‘This is it, the classic Saturday Sag Harbor ride. During its decades of history, it has built strong riders, lasting friendships and even the Sag Harbor Cycle Company.’
Your new Mountain Bike can take you on a hidden adventure; try the trails at Fresh Pond on the way to Montauk. A new road bike will allow you to explore East Hampton and find out what riding ‘South of the Highway’ is all about. And of course, Fat Bikes – because sometimes you need to go over things. It’s just more fun in the air!
The GURU Experience at SHCC is the team’s commitment to finding you the perfect bike and making the adjustments that truly allow you to call your next bike your absolute favorite.
SHCC is a bit of many things coming together as one. . . a smart sales team, a service department that keeps your riding, GURU custom fitting, rentals, The Group Ride, Special Events and the people who make it all real.
Around Again – Consignment Store
On the Long Wharf, Sag Harbor 631.725.4067
If you are wandering into Around Again for your first visit, it’s immediately recognizable that this is not your everyday consignment store! An instant later it’s obvious that being in the Hamptons is the wellspring of this amazing collection of previously loved and well cared for treasures – soon to be your very own!
Browse the tags: Ralph Lauren, von Furstenberg, NY look, LOUDA, Givenchy, Missoni, ETRO, RL Country, Moschino and Loro Piana. Wandering further are Stuart Weitzman, Marie-Celine, Gucci, Betsey Johnson, Michael Kors, BCBG, DKNY, Calypso, Prada, Jimmy Choo, Coach, Tiffany, Yurman, Giuseppe Zanotti and more…
At Around Again it’s about touching it and the way it feels when you try it on that matter most. And there is so much to see, touch and try on. You can wonder who may have worn the RL sweater to a casual lunch at the Kennedy compound or the Missoni Tux to a formal event at the Spielberg’s for a new movie screening at home. Around Again is vintage and beyond!
Sylvester & Company – A Modern General Store
103 Main Street, Sag Harbor, 631.725.5012
Sylvester & Company is not the type of General Store found on the winding roads of Vermont, but it may well be the perfect Modern GS – beautifully redesigned for Sag Harbor and the Hamptons.
A bit of everything finds the shelves at S&C. Entertaining? Unbreakable, stemless wine glasses, Laguiole wine openers, silverware, cheese knives. There is stuff for the Bar, including some cool cocktail napkins. Shopping for the home – you will find a selection of lighting, rugs, candles, wallpaper and accent items.
For almost 30 years locals and visitors alike have waited on line for Lynda Sylvester’s coffee with her signature scent of chocolate and almond. S&C Iced Organic Hibiscus Tisane has been developing its own cult following in recent years. It’s delicious, refreshing and thirst-quenching with no sugar.
Two last things that caught my eye – #1: S&C calls it the ‘On Main Street Boyfriend Shirt’ what it is is 100% fine cotton, made in the USA and best of all… everyone at your next dinner party will ask where the cool shirt came from and what’s the ‘boyfriend thing about?’ #2: With everything cool that is a part of Sylvester & Company, imagine if they could help with your Interior Design. Just ask, because design, as well as staging, falls within their repertoire!
Fishers Home Furnishings
144 Main Street, Sag Harbor 631.725.0006
If you have been a Guest of The Mill House Inn over the many years we have been curating the interior decor, you have no doubt seen much of what Fishers has to offer! For the past three decades, Fishers of Sag Harbor has been offering their guests rare and fine furniture from around the world.
Additionally, the craftsman at Fishers have been designing and building their own furniture collections. And MHI has happily been one of their clients for the past twenty years. Custom built and finished as requested by their clients. They specialize in reclaimed wood and old-world techniques, their designs are fully customizable and of course, finished as you wish!
This is not an online adventure, but one where you must meet the people talk about your home or the new one you have just purchased. They will get to know you, what you like, the pieces that will fit with your ideas and begin to craft a plan. Actually – your plan! – to make you feel comfortable in your home, almost as if you had lived there forever. From day one, Fishers has made homes better, they make every room a living room and a place you love.
All these shops, and more, are what make us love living in the Hamptons! And if you don’t happen to live here, at least you can take a bit of the Hamptons home with you!
Until next week,
Gary
