"Take A Few Days Off" - Westchester Magazine - June 2008

By: Malerie Yolen-Cohen with Esther Davidowitz, Marisa LaScala, and Laurie Yarnell

Who says weekends away have to be spent lounging poolside in some dusty B&B? While that’s all well and good, here are some easy-to-drive-to jaunts that will have you hiking, shopping, dining, soaking in culture, living it up—or being completely daring.

Travelers these days have a voracious appetite for value but not at the expense of luxury. We want high-thread-count linens, featherbeds, transcendent views, meals that transport, award-winning wine lists, and, at checkout, a bill that doesn’t insult our intelligence. In other words, we want highbrow without the “if-you-have-to-ask-then-you-can’t-afford-it” attitude. We searched for those B&Bs, inns, and hotels whose owners or managers wish to provide an exceptional body, mind, and soul-satisfying experience but, amazingly, take pleasure in service over outrageous profit. ......

[over-the-top]

Fido-Friendly Fun

The Mill House Inn

Two and a half hours from White Plains

If the big black dog on the Mill House Inn’s website doesn’t convince you that this standout B&B in tony East Hampton is pet-friendly, perhaps the big plush black dog that lounges on each and every bed will. Proving that you don’t have to sacrifice ultimate indulgence while traveling with Fido, the Mill House Inn was voted one of “Top 50 Small Hotels in the U.S.” by Zagat 2007 and 2008. If you’re taking your dog, why not bring your kids along, too? Rooms are smashing nautical sleek–the America’s Cup Suite has navy blue walls, flat-screen plasma TVs, two-person glass shower—and filled with the snazzy amenities you’d expect in an extravagant human/adult-only property: Frette linens, Kohler fixtures, featherbeds, organic soaps, and bath salts. Complimentary breakfast here is so over-the-top amazing, non-guests often call for reservations. “We once ran an ad in a local magazine offering ‘Breakfast for two starting at four hundred dollars, lodging included,’” says owner/innkeeper Sylvia Muller, “and we got calls for breakfast alone.”

While Here: Take the kids to the elaborate playground in the middle of East Hampton or to the Bridgehampton Children’s Museum. You can enjoy pony rides, salamander walks, story times, or Sag Harbor’s Goat on a Boat Puppet Theatre. Slather on the sunscreen and spend a day or two at Main Beach—considered one of the world’s best.

Ask for: Captain Suite ($950 in season), a two-room suite with one king and one queen sofa bed, gray-green walls, and a fireplace. Add $75 per child and $50 per “good dog.”

Just the Facts: Room rates ($225-$1,200) include extraordinary gourmet breakfast (e.g., salmon-and-goat cheese thin-crust breakfast pizza), use of beach blankets, towels, cookies round the clock, oversize bathrooms with double marble showers in suites, iPod docks, the New York Times, and flat-screen TV.

"The Hamptons"   by Adam Sachs   February 2007

Condé Nast Traveler | Dream Trip 2007

The Old Hook Windmill still stands in East Hampton. The weekend traffic flows around it, but there is a pocket of perfect quiet across the street occupied by the Mill House Inn. April and I check in one morning and are led down a little path behind the eighteenth-century main house to our mansion-sized suite in a newer structure behind the gardens. The ceilings are high, and there is ice at the bar and model sailboats on the mantel. We immediately turn on the flat-screen televisions, light the gas fireplace, and run the gigantic bath. It is a shame to have to actually leave a room like this, but in the interest of research we must return to the main house, where Sylvia Muller, the proprietress, is setting up breakfast.

Sylvia and her husband, Gary, came to Long Island in the mid-nineties from New Jersey. They are true Hamptons evangelizers. It's probably worth staying at the Mill House Inn just for the what-to-do guide that the couple leave in each room, a personal and opinionated compendium of East End attractions. Of the walking dunes of Napeague, they write apocryphally: "Imagine yourself as Rudolph Valentino in the silent film The Sheik, which was shot here." Of the off-season: "The beautiful weather lingers even when the beautiful people have fled—replaced first by clouds of monarch butterflies migrating through, and then by swirls of autumn leaves, starry skies, and snowflakes." Even more exhaustive is the lengthy breakfast menu. Breakfast is the only meal served at the Mill House Inn, but one meal alone cannot contain Gary's enthusiasms—from the crayfish and andouille étouffée omelet and Sylvia's eggnog brioche French toast to the plum tomatoes and fresh mozzarella pizza with ricotta salata and basil-parsley pesto ("Try adding some sausage or Parma ham!").

Sylvia tells me that she likes to give guests advice about favorite walks and fishing spots and historic homes, because so many people come to the Hamptons without a real sense of what to do. The beaches are the draw, but there is so much more to see, and Sylvia would like to help. A mother and daughter came out and wanted to get invited to a cocktail party and have their picture taken like real socialites; Sylvia worked it out. I'm convinced, though, that Gary's large portions are a subtle attempt to sedate the guests by overfeeding them. Everyone in the breakfast room has the pliant, drunkenly happy look that Iberian pigs get after they've been feasting on acorns.

Vox Magazine Memorial Day 2006  " Bountiful Breakfasts "

The rich history, culinary excellence and artistic charm of the East End are nowhere more apparent than in East Hampton’s B&B's. From bohemian beach bungalows to grand resorts, East Hampton offers the perfect B&B to meet the weary traveler’s style and needs.

For the last seven years, Silvia and Gary Muller, proprietors of the Mill House Inn on North Main Street, have sought to create a B&B that caters to an elite clientele-without losing the Inn’s country charm.

Muller is a restauranteur and chef who always dreamed of owning his own in, so breakfast at his establishment is not you average fare.  The menu offers 26 full entrées to choose from- a foodie’s fantasy-including a crayfish and andouille omelet, five kinds of scrambled eggs with a variety of fillings, eggnog brioche French toast, chorizo and eggs and savory corn pancakes, just to name a few.  “We guarantee that our guests won’t need lunch, and I’ve never been challenged on that,” said Ms. Muller.

But it’s not just the sumptuous breakfasts that have kept this B&B humming.  The spacious suites feature king-sized, overstuffed feather beds; gas fireplaces; grand bathrooms with marble showers; Serenity air baths; heated stone floors and, of course, fluffy towels and bathrobes.  Flat screen TVs with DVD players, plus iPod docks and internet access, ensure that guests will be entertained on even the rainiest of days. The gorgeous grounds feature Adirondack chairs, a perfect spot for reading the paper and enjoying one of the Mullers' homemade cookies.

The Mullers and their setter, Corry, take pride in the fact that the Mill House is both dog and child friendly.  They family’s constant presence, a friendly staff, attention to detail and a commitment to continually improving the Inn are reasons why this historic 1790 homestead bustles throughout the summer season.

Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful “home away from home”.  We were extremely comfortable, and our stay couldn’t have been more relaxing.

Meeting our friends in your Inn made our vacation perfect.

Thank you for your hospitality!

Thank you so much for making us all feel so welcome, comfortable and pampered.  Your house is absolutely beautiful and warm and you and your staff do an amazing job at making sure your guests are happy.  I appreciate all of your help with our staff and clients throughout the weekend.  I will definitely be telling everyone I know to stay here when they come out East!

Thanks to you our wedding day (August 7th) was better than we could’ve ever imagined.  Your home is absolutely magnificent inside and out and the Hampton Holiday Room, oh boy!

Gary’s breakfasts (the French toast – wow- was one example) are simply outrageous.

We plan to travel often, but I am quite sure that we will look long and hard to find a place that is half as good as this was.

Thanks again for your warm congratulations and smiles.

Fondly, Karen & John
