Long Pond Greenbelt Nature Center 1061 Sag Harbor Tpke, Bridgehampton 287-5720

Long Pond Greenbelt Nature Center Summer Lecture Series 6:00 – 7:00 pm
Eric Woodward will show images from his historic postcard collection. Most of the cards show scenes of Southampton and surrounding areas from 1905 to 1935. Many show local buildings, houses and street scenes, but Eric will also include cards showing local scenery and outdoor lifestyles, for example ranging from gathering Holly in Amagansett to harvesting cranberries in Riverhead. Also, summertime would not be complete without a good dose of beach and bathing scenes. "It's remarkable the depth of information about local life contained on these early cards, information not easily available elsewhere," says Eric. This event is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt and is open to the public. We can accommodate 25 people. Parking is limited and may require a short walk along a dirt drive. This building is not handicap accessible.

Sun 8/17 Pull My Daisy

Tues 8/19 Rules of the Game 7:30 pm
Directed by Jean Renoir 1939, 106min. French w/ English subtitles.  Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, Jean Renoir’s masterpiece The Rules of the Game is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners. At a weekend hunting party, amorous escapades abound among the aristocratic guests and are mirrored by the activities of the servants downstairs. The refusal of one of the guests to play by society’s rules sets off a chain of events that ends in tragedy. Poorly received upon its release in 1939, the film was severely re-edited, and the original negative was destroyed during World War II. Only in 1959 was the film fully reconstructed and embraced by audiences and critics who now see it as a timeless representation of a vanishing way of life.
